okay. this is what i was told when i was chatting with my sis about the US-'vakia game a few days ago:
let's say the u.s. team member is running toward the slovakian goal. if he's closer to the goal than any slovakian players (except the goal keeper) are, he cannot handle the ball without being off sides.
but if the u.s. team player were to begin running alongside a slovakian player at about the same time and reach the goal first, he could handle the ball without being off sides.

I think I actually get that now.
