"Men come and go; ideas remain--they continue to walk on the legs of others"

Amazing, amazing man. His integrity, humble devotion to his job, his honor have done so much for the people of Italy. As a child I read one of the volumes of The Lives of the Saints and was struck by the fact that none of these people we call saints were born to perfection; rather, they were faced with hideous cruelty and *chose* to respond in a divine manner. I think of Giovanni Falcone in the same category. We can debate whether or not there's Heaven or Hell, whether or not there's a God, whether or not it's possible to determine sainthood. But I do know that this guy could have colluded, could have been lazy, could have looked the other way, could have been half-hearted about his commitment to his job or his family or his integrity. But instead he made the choice day after day to be a simple, good man. He was not born in tights with a cape and a big S on his chest. But he chose the divine path.
