Men, Women, and Crazes

This interesting note from my friend Catherine:

There's a Twilight discussion raging on a video gaming message board I follow (a lot of speculation on why chicks dig it so much, interspersed with fewer people who are actually familiar with the books/movies), and it spawned the following comment from someone:

"Has there been a cultural phenomenon that didn't have an important gender bias?"

hmm. well, one that comes to mind is the beatles. i recollect their having been just as impressive to boys as they were to girls. granted, it was the girls who were fainting, but i think there was a fair number of boys sweating and screaming at the concerts, growing out moppy hair, and starting garage bands. the public got most* nervous* about the girls loving the fab four, because of our issues with overt female sexuality, but i don't think you ever were going to see a guy being made fun of for learning to play every beatles single he could learn on his acoustic guitar.
