i haven't seen The Kids Are All Right yet, but it won't stop me from hazarding an opinion! anyhoo, i think a lot of these awards are far more political than we the viewers would like. i think a lot of times awards stand in for lifetime achievement recognition, even when other nominees clearly gave superior performances. and i strongly believe that management and distributor lobbying greatly affects award outcomes. and i think stars' personal lives affect outcomes—e.g., could you imagine mel gibson EVER getting an oscar any time in the near future, even for an earth-shattering performance? too politically risky.
and the hollywood gossip mill says that annette bening and warren beatty are seriously on the rocks because of some heartbreaking drama at home—their oldest child has just turned eighteen and is determined to go forward with gender reassignment, and warren is fiercely opposed and heartbroken while annette is trying mightily to support their daughter. so, anyway, what i'm saying is it wouldn't surprise me at all if a rush of love and protective feeling for annette during her time of great pain makes her even more appealing for professional accolades among and by her peers.

I did not know that about Annette Benning and Warren Beatty! Wow, what a situation. They were together at the SAG awards last night; I hope they can weather this storm. I completely agree with you abou the political angle, and there's also a sociological angle (e.g., comedies don't get respect).
